A typical weekend (Birding at Jakkur Lake)

Being on Deputation to Japan for 106days, had let to complete shutoff of my activities. It was already an month since I was back from Japan but still couldn't get a chance try all of my old activities. First week after my return had been to home, next week to a Trek, the next one went in Cricket and Badminton, one more went in Piligrimage to Kukke. So finally this weekend I got a chance to restart my one recent activity - Bird Watching (November 20 2011).

When this unplanned weekend was about to start, I got an chance/choice to take Interviews on Saturday. After finishing those Interviews, we had a colleagues Marriage to spend the later part of Saturday. And marriage hall looked office away from office, with many colleagues attending the Reception. After a heavy lunch and equally heavy chatting, I reached Arun's room at around 11 30Pm and he will be my accompany for birding on next day.

When the plan was to meet at hebbal junction by 6 45am, Me and Arun got up at around 6 15. So it was 6 45 when we actually started from BTM and then we realised that we dont know the shortest way to reach Hebbal from BTM. With some info from "Bangalore Routes", we started towards Majestic, further surpassed RaceCourseRoad and then finally on verge to Hebbal Junction. Then I called Harish to inform that we will be late, but we got to know that he had the same answer.

And it was that one big Flyover, after which we were at the decided meeting point, got to see the Hell Boy- Harish waiting for us. As usual, Harish had some unexciting news for us that Guru will not be joining us. More than this, none of us knew where that Jakkur lake is. Harish with some vague idea based on Guru's inputs, started leading us and it was already 7 30 by then. Surpassing GKVK, we were infornt of Jakkur Airfield but the Express way construction made it un noticeble for us. Soon we realised and went back to Jakkur Junction and took a deviation towards right, which says its way to Sampigehalli.

After that deviation, we were just following that AirField fence and then we got a Junction to confuse ourselves. With inputs from Local guy, we proceeded further to face another big junction where we took right to mess ourselves. The road we took was leading to Rachenalli Kere and not jakkur Kere. With a one last input from some guy, we headed correctly towards Jakkur Village Circle and a one last right to be on Left side of Jakkur Lake.

Lake was a huge one, one side is the Railway track and a road on other side with Fence surrounding it. It was the checkdam of the lake to allow excess water to flow down, was entry point and looked DobhiGhat with many washing lashes. It is at this time, Guru called to inform that he will be joining us and he is the Guru for our Birding hobby.

Me, Arun, Harish took out our binocs and started walking on that Lake Trench. Curious Harish, started spotting some birds and the list includes Moore Hen, Egrets, Herons, Coots, Bushchat and few raptors. With some steps further with binocs between our eyes and lake, we could find some interesting birds on a tree at the centre of the lake. And at the same time we got to see the Guru is finally on and joined us to continue this Birding. His presence helped us to identify the birds on that tree and they include Painted storks, Pelicans, Grey Herons, coromorants and the Mid aged Brahminy Kites. Each of these were in many numbers.

We further crossed that tree and proceeded to farther end of the lake and on our way we could see the Development work on the Lakes bund (hope Bund and lake will not be scarificed for this). Also it was curious Guru who was looking for Ducks and Waders, took us further ahead. There were some Gargany, Coots, Snake Bird and some waders like Stilt, some sandpipers, still at far end there were few which could not be identified correctly.

Finally with a brief Birding at this Jakkur lake, we started back and decided to have breakfast in a village on our way back. And it was Tatte idli and Rice bath at some hotel in jakkur, which made our hungry stomachs calm down.

When we were Riding back to our destinations, Guru interrupted to mention that "can we search for Rampura Lake"? And as it was sunday none of said no. But the thing is, none of us knew where it is and how to reach there. It was a first right we took and proceeded on a long undeviated road and a sudden bifurcation in road pushed us to dilema. With some inputs from people over there and our own idea, we took a road, filled our selves with Tender coconut and started riding. We again got a big junction and we were almost on our way further, but a local guy gave us info which made us understand that we are on wrong track. Further proceeded on his inputs, we took some deviations and finally a local guy of Rampura, joined us to show our way to his village. And it was right side to the place where that villager got down was a huge mass of mud and dust, which was that huge Rampura lake. The lake was split to make a way of connectivity and hence one side of lake is no more and otherside is almost at the verge of its disappearence.

But we could see a huge number of Waders and other wet land birds, even in that about to disappear lake. Once huge lake which being bisected into 2, are still making it a hub for avian life. After that delightfull sight of birds but an heartening sight of the lake, we headed back to our homes.
And an hobbyfull day came to an end with hours left to head start an another routine week!!
